A Mott Haven nonprofit group is focused on helping immigrant families in the South Bronx learn English and know their rights.
MASA, short for the Mexican American Students’ Alliance, offers free language classes as well as K-6 after-school early childhood education.
Jennifer Salgado, an organizer at MASA, says they are always looking for volunteers to help. She says that their program makes an effort to be culturally responsible and select readings that reflect the community with which they work.
“If they're growing up only seeing a certain kind of people, then that's what they're going to be looking forward to in their lives,” says Salgado.
She says MASA also educates immigrants about their rights and “empowers them with tools they can use further on.”
There are ESL classes still open for enrollment.
