A break dancer visiting Puerto Rico on business quickly shifted his focus in the wake of hundreds of earthquakes.
Bronx-born Richard Colon, known as "Crazy Legs," arrived in Puerto Rico on Jan. 6 – the day after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern side of the island. The Bronx native was there to prepare for his music festival, "Puerto Rock Steady," but found himself on a different mission.
Colon teamed up with other groups on the ground to help those whose lives had been rocked by more than 300 earthquakes since late December. He and the others sought specifically to help those whose lives had been rocked by the natural disasters, looking specifically for people who were bed-ridden, in wheelchairs or in nursing homes.
The effort involved handing out supplies like tents, solar lights, portable stoves and other necessities. Moving forward, mental health issues will also be a focus, Colon says.
Colon returned to the United States on Monday and plans to head back to the island on Friday, hours after he hosts a Thursday night fundraiser at Bronx Brewery.
