Some are calling for the Kingsbridge Armory to serve as an additional space in preparation for an overflow of COVID-19 patients.
The state identified four new sites for makeshift hospitals to eventually relieve the mounting pressure.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and New York Expo Center in the Bronx are among the newly identified sites for temporary hospital construction, which adds an additional 4,000 beds to the state's capacity. The Jacob Javits Center has already been converted.
The convention center, which has hosted events like New York Comic Con, is now home to 1,000 hospital beds. Cuomo says it's scheduled to open Monday.
Assemblyman Jose Rivera says the Kingsbridge Armory, a nearly five-acre facility and possibly the largest armory in the world, has been vacant and underutilized for decades. He says it's due to the fact that it is tied up in a plan to become an ice skating rink that was approved by City Council in 2013.
The Social Justice Caucus of the United Federation of Teachers has since started a petition for the Kingsbridge Armory to be turned into a hospital as well.
News 12 reached out to Cuomo's office to find out if the armory would fit the criteria for a temporary hospital.
