Prosecutor’s office: 15 people charged in Lakewood after police find at least 60 gathered for funeral

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has announced 15 people have been charged with violating Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order banning the gathering of people after Lakewood police found a group of at least 60 people who had gathered for a funeral.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has announced 15 people have been charged with violating Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order banning the gathering of people after Lakewood police found a group of at least 60 people who had gathered for a funeral.

Police were dispatched Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. for a report of a large gathering on the corner of 8th Street and Madison.

Police found a group of around 60 to 70 people gathered for a funeral.
According to police, the gathering was in violation of Executive Order No. 107 signed by the governor banning gatherings of people, whether they be at weddings, parties, celebrations, or other social events including funerals.

While police tried to break up the gathering, the crowd became unruly.
Police say one man even gave a false name and social security number. He was later taken into custody.
