Mayor Bill de Blasio visited the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx Saturday to tour its food distribution center.
The armory is the largest emergency food distribution center in New York City. News 12 is told that more than 11,000 taxi and for-hire drivers have signed up to deliver food.
The drivers help deliver more than 1 million meals to people's homes. The program started in late March to feed those who are hungry and unable to leave their homes during the coronavirus pandemic.
The program is for New Yorkers who are vulnerable to COVID-19, like the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.
De Blasio praised the city agencies and livery drivers that joined together to put this operation together. Bronx Borough President Rubin Diaz Jr. also joined the mayor on his tour, and applauded his efforts.
Councilman Fernando Cabrera had suggested the armory to officials. He tells News 12 it's easy for New Yorkers to use the program, and that all they need to do is call 311.
Cabrera say the one way to support residents during the crisis is by keeping the vulnerable home and employing those who need work.
