A Bronx teacher is pushing his students’ imaginations to recreate famous works of art and new expressive pieces with items they have at home while they learn remotely.
It’s been about seven weeks since classes went online, and Fordham Leadership Academy art teacher Larry Minetti is making sure his students are continuing to tap into their creative side.
"I find that being creative at home with found objects, laundry, things around the house, building pieces together really gets the kids going and their juices flowing,” says Minetti.
Minetti and his students are re-creating art using random items around the house.
"I try to make the projects work based on the most basic things they would have in their home,” says Minetti.

From putting a spin on rock band Queen's second album cover to using laundry to depict Van Gogh's "The Starry Night," the students says it's been fun thinking outside the box.
Jason Regalado is a senior, and is missing out on some rites of passage like graduation and prom, but he says art helps.
"There are a lot of challenges that everyone is going through right now, and we are trying our best to maintain everything trying to manage time and art is really good for stress management,” says Regalado.
Although this medium may provide a release for his students while learning remotely during this coronavirus pandemic, Minetti says he is still connecting with them beyond the art.
"I try to give them social and emotional support, right on the screen. That time frame we are together online really helps the both of us,” says Minetti.
