Coronavirus budget cuts have ended the city's composting program, but groups are fighting to try to get some of that money back by using #SaveOurCompost.
Meredith Danberg-Ficarelli, the director of Common Ground Compost LLC, says “about $28 million approximately that was cut from the budget” focused on organics recycling and recycling education.
That means a network of pick-up and drop-off locations, as well as the nonprofits who ran them, stopped working because they lost their funding from the city.
Danberg-Ficarelli and Ceci Pineda – the executive director of BK ROT – will be testifying before the City Council to refund $7 million of the program.
That money would allow 170 recycling sites to open.
