The family of Malik Tyquan Graves – a man accused in a shooting who was then fatally shot by police on Tuesday – held a vigil for him in Crown Heights.

Police say they were responding to a ShotSpotter alert at Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue when they saw one man had been shot. They soon discovered Graves, 34, behind a nearby tree with a handgun.

Police say they and neighbors asked Graves to put his weapon down. When he refused, officials say 10 officers fired upon him. The incident was recorded on body cameras and in a witness video.

Graves died from his injuries.

News 12 has asked police for an update in their investigation regarding the body camera footage and the working status of the officers involved.

Friends and family told News 12 that he did not have to die this way.
