Activists brought attention to hardships faced by black transgender individuals during the Black Trans Lives Matter march on Wednesday.
The rally started at the Barclays Center and made its way to Brooklyn Borough Hall.
It comes amid weeks of protests throughout the city following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
"I’m specifically scared for black trans women. Black women are already told they don't feel pain, they're fine. What's going to happen to black trans women who come in after they've been beaten up?" asked organizer Misha Koleci.
The activists say black trans people face additional hardships like homophobia, racism and discrimination, and they are calling for an end to that.
A rally for black trans lives at Grand Army Plaza Sunday saw thousands of people. Organizers say that it is important to keep the momentum going.
They say they’re seeing a small victory in the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to roll back protections for transgender people seeking health care.
However, they say more needs to be done.
It is also Pride month, and although the Pride Parade has been canceled due to COVID-19, they say it won’t stop them from coming out to fight for their rights.
