Phase two of reopening New York City officially began Monday, with Mayor Bill de Blasio saying an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 workers are returning back to work.

Phase two reopening will include office, in-store retail, outdoor dining, hair salons and barbershops, real estate, vehicle sales, leases and rentals, commercial building management and retail rental, repair and cleaning.

Mayor de Blasio says the city will be helping businesses restart by distributing 4 million face coverings.

The mayor says since Friday there have been 3,192 applications of the city’s Open Restaurants program.

Since phase one, ridership on public transport has increased. The mayor says ridership of subways have increased 29%, buses 22% and the Staten Island Ferry ridership has increase 31%.

He says overall traffic into Manhattan has increased 24% by East River bridges and 10% by Harlem River bridges.

In addition to restarting businesses, the mayor says the city is also aiming to curb gun violence with the Cure Violence initiative.

The Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) is working to decrease gun violence near MAP sites. He says $10 million in new Crisis Management System funding will help add staff this summer, expanding to all 20 precincts with highest gun violence.

CMS and the NYPD will also try to prevent retaliation, increase coverage in areas with uptick in gun violence.

They look to extend coverage beyond core catchment areas and will also begin summer hiring by Cure Violence providers to help deepen the connection with the community and bring in the youth.
