Arrest warrant: Watertown mom left kids home alone to go to Florida with boyfriend

A Watertown woman is accused of leaving her two young kids home alone so she could go to Florida with her boyfriend for a long weekend, according to her arrest warrant.
Kerry Caviasca is charged with risk of injury to a child and reckless endangerment. Court documents show the investigation began Dec. 17 after Caviasca's ex-husband told police he believed Caviasca had left their children home alone from Nov. 20-22. He said he hadn't been able to reach the kids over that weekend, and he sent his father to Caviasca's home, but no one answered. The warrant says Caviasca's ex-husband also learned that both children, who are under 12 years old, missed school that Monday with unexcused absences.
Police say Caviasca's ex-husband got access to one child's cellphone and found messages from her from that weekend telling the kids to stay in the basement. According to the arrest warrant, on the night of Nov. 21, one child wrote: "What are we going to have for dinner?" The warrant says Caviasca responded: "Just eat candy I'm sorry…whatever is downstairs…there's so much downstairs…I'll make it up to you…Sorry."
In an interview with police, one child told them they were left snacks and ordered Uber Eats several times.
The warrant contains additional text messages from that weekend that police say, "seem to imply she (Kerry) is adamant that the children stay downstairs in the basement and not be seen."
When police went to Caviasca's home on Dec. 17, they say she admitted she'd gone to Florida but said her brother had watched the children. The warrant shows when police questioned Caviasca's brother, he stated, "he did not remember" and "did not wish to be involved." When police later spoke with the children, both said they'd been home alone without adults while their mother was away with her boyfriend. Police say further investigation also determined Cavascia's brother was at work on the days in question.
Caviasca has worked for Waterbury Public Schools for 14 1/2 years. The school district released a statement to News 12, saying "Waterbury Public Schools has been informed of a pending allegation regarding a Waterbury Public School staff member. The alleged actions do not represent the values of our district. The teacher has been placed on leave while the District conducts an investigation."
Caviasca is free on $5,000 bond and is due in Waterbury Superior Court on Jan. 25. Attorney Joseph DeCicco is representing Caviasca and told News 12, "My client and I have no comment at this time and respectfully request her privacy be respected during this difficult period. Any comments made will be on the record after a careful review of the evidence and allegations the State will seek to prove."
