Community outraged after man heavily damages Jewish Center in Bensonhurst
Elected officials, Jewish leaders and community members are outraged after an attack damaged the Shore Parkway Jewish Center in Bensonhurst.
As the Jewish community celebrates Sukkot, many are shocked to hear about the attack Sunday night. Local leaders say an attack on one group is an attack on everyone and it will not be allowed.
In surveillance video, a man can be seen pulling down the sukkah outside of the building. A sukkah is a hut that people use during the holiday to gather and feast.
Police say 25-year-old Osman Butt used a flagpole to break numerous windows and damage other property -- including two menorahs inside of the building. The incident happened around 8:50 p.m. Sunday.
Police arrived while Butt was still at the Jewish center, and he was apprehended and charged with burglary hate and criminal mischief – both as a hate crime.
The community is uniting to denounce this attack.
The building remains damaged, but the president of the Jewish center says they created a GoFundMe to raise money in hope of fixing it. He says their goal is to raise $100,000.
