Tenants at an East Patchogue apartment complex say they have been living without heat during freezing conditions.
Joanne Cady lives at the Conifer Village Apartment and says she hasn't had heat for weeks.
Cady says the refurbished heater installed by the property owner was emitting noxious fumes. She says she was hospitalized for a week due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
"I was so sick so never again will I ever have a unit like this," Cady says.
She says she has repeatedly asked building management to install an electric heater, but they installed another refurbished heater that emits noxious fumes.
The Suffolk County Health Department started investigating Cady's complaint and seven additional cases at the apartment complex in January.
At least three Health Department inspections were done at Cady's apartment.
News 12 is told violations were cited during inspections of all eight complaints.
A Health Department spokesperson told News 12 that while some violations have been corrected, there are still some apartments with non-functioning heating systems.
News 12 is told the Health Department has initiated legal action against the property owner for continued violations.
News 12 left several messages for building management and had not heard back as of 3 p.m.
