Megan Schwarz works with the New York Bully Crew, an animal rescue organization. Its founder, Craig Fields, asked her to respond to the incident on 135th Street and Park Avenue Sunday after he says his hotline blew up.
"His feet were tied up, he wasn't well-treated, there was blood coming out of his mouth, he was covered in maggots, it was just such a disrespectful way to treat an animal,” said Schwarz.
"Dogs deserve better, this -- in the Bronx -- this is a big problem,” says Schwarz. Fields says in 10 years, the New York Bully Crew has rescued about 10,000 dogs.
Schwarz decided to name the dog found Legacy. "I would really like for Legacy's "legacy" to go down with an arrest and conviction,” said Fields.
NYPD Animal Cruelty is investigating if Legacy’s death was caused by abuse. An external examination has so far revealed no signs of trauma or bone fractures, but they’re waiting on an autopsy.
The New York Bully Crew is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of a potential abuser.
Field says his organization rescues a large number of abused pit bulls.
