Hollywood is coming to New Jersey! Once public housing, Newark site to get $125M film studio

The former site of one of Newark's oldest public housing complexes is getting a makeover to become a TV and film production studio.
The Seth Boyden homes in the city's South Ward were demolished earlier this year.
Mayor Ras Baraka and Gov. Phil Murphy announced plans for the studio Tuesday.
The facility will be owned and operated by Great Point Studios, co-founded by Hallmark Channel founder Robert Halmi. The 300,000-square foot facility will cost $125 million. Great Point Studios will build, own and operate the 12-acre campus. It's expected to create hundreds of new jobs.
"We're building what is known as a three show campus, so we can have as many as three giant series here at one time," says Halmi. "Each series will employ about 350-400, so we could have anywhere up to 1,000 people working here a day, 24/7."
Its anchor tenant will be global entertainment provider Lionsgate.
Educational programs and internships at the studio for Newark high school and college students will be offered.
The studio is expected to open in late 2024.
