Jersey City statue honors civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune

Jersey City unveiled a 9-foot bronze statue paying tribute to civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune.
Bethune is famously known for her push for education.
The statue shows Bethune holding what appears to be books, depicting herself in her younger years.
“It’s not just a statue in the sense that where it is you can just walk by and feel you can ignore, I think it makes you want to question and find out more about, do you know who she was, what she stood for and her ideals, and what she has contributed to the county,” says director Alvin Pettit, from the Bethune Life Center.
A few months ago, the newly constructed $3.5 million Bethune Park opened.
