Two young NYPD officers were shot in the line of duty – one is dead, the other is fighting for his life. The tragedy happened in Harlem, and hits home on Long Island.

The Nassau County PBA issued a statement saying in part, "The Nassau County PBA stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the NYPD and we pray for the families of the two officers who were brutally killed and injured. Words cannot describe the deep sorrow and frustration that every member of law enforcement feels right now.“

Suffolk police also released a statement:

Officer Jason Rivera, 22, was gunned down while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem Friday night. His partner, Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, was gravely wounded and is fighting for his life.

The tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job, especially for those who have family members serving with the NYPD.

“My brother-in-law is a lieutenant NYPD and I tell him all the time how grateful I am of his service and how tough it is to be a police officer in this day and age…Every decision you make in a split instance,” said Michael Wood, of Plainview.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell says officers will wear black bands on their shields in memory of Rivera.

Rivera and Mora are the fourth and fifth officers shot in the city this month.
