Neighbors in the Silvermine section of Norwalk say they are exhausted because loud noises and light from crews working on the Merritt Parkway are making it difficult to sleep.

The Merritt Parkway opened in the late 1930s, so the state is adding shoulders, redoing bridges and improving drainage, and all of this construction is happening overnight.

Residents who live in the area say the construction has been ongoing for months and has only gotten louder in recent weeks. They say the noise paired with the bright lights are especially disruptive for getting the sleep they need.

A state spokesperson says there is no way to do a project of this scope without having some negative impacts.

"If you do work during the day, half the folks are upset because there is additional traffic, if you work at night people are upset about the noise, we do our best to balance those things," said Josh Morgan, a spokesperson with Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Officials say this is a projected two-year project and is expected to be completed by fall of 2024. The normal work schedule is currently Monday-Thursday.
