A Bridgeport man wanted for allegedly killing his kids' mother's boyfriend was arraigned Monday after turning himself in to police early this morning.
Police say Miguel Rojas killed 37-year-old Jalen Parilla when he opened fire on West Liberty Street near West Avenue Friday night.
Rojas, 29, is charged with murder, stalking and risk of injury to a child. He also faces gun charges.
Parilla's family spoke with News 12 over the weekend about their loss.
"You want to wake up thinking you know, it's not true, that he's not dead. But I was in the hospital, and I saw it myself, it's not a dream," said Parilla's stepfather Armando Perez.
At the time of the shooting, police say Parilla was with a teenage family member and his girlfriend, who was previously involved with Rojas and shares two kids with him.
Parilla's family says Rojas had been stalking the couple and put a tracking device on Parilla's car before the shooting.
Candles in the shape of a J were placed at the scene of the shooting.
"My heart brought me here today," said a family friend who did not want to be identified. "He was like family. He was family to my family."
The family friend says this wasn't the first time Rojas pulled a gun on Parilla.
"Almost two months ago, he pulled a gun on him by his place of business," said the friend.
There are no charges from a previous incident.
In court, it became known Rojas has a prior conviction for assault.
The judge set bond at $1 million, although Rojas' attorney asked for leniency. The attoreny said Rojas owns a business, has deep family ties to the community and turned himself in.
The judge also signed off on a restraining order against Rojas.
His next court date is Dec. 21.
