A resident says he found many bags of asbestos waste in industrial containers the backyard of his Islip Terrace property.
Andy Sirico says when he signed the lease back in the spring, he asked his landlord, Diana Honeycutt, what was inside the numerous industrial containers and trailers that sat in the backyard.
Sirico claims Honeycutt said they would be removed, but weeks turned into months. That's when he decided to move the trailers to the back off the property so he could have more access to the backyard and garage.
When he opened up the back of this trailer and saw signs reading, "Danger Asbestos Cancer" and "Lung Disease Hazard," he says he knew his backyard could be a potential danger zone.
Sirico says he found documents inside the containers that appear to link the asbestos to a company called Coastal Environmental. The documents indicate the MTA paid the firm to remove the hazardous substance.
For some reason, the asbestos material ended up on the property.
Honeycutt's attorney told News 12 his client had no idea what was in the containers and is cooperating with the appropriate agencies.
Meanwhile, Sirico says he is not looking for any compensation, he just wants the toxic material out of his rented backyard.
"I think she knew that it was here, that's my opinion, and that is a crime," he says.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation confirms there is an active investigation into the asbestos found at the Islip Terrace home.
The DEC is also working with other agencies to determine potential violations.
