The calendar flips to December and on cue the weather gets very wintry. A hearty storm system drives through the tri-state with a slew of weather conditions New Jersey residents will endure for the Tuesday morning commute.
The mainly piece of storminess stays well inland at the start. A developing coastal storm begins to take over around daybreak. It looks like the storm's position is a little too close to the coast for a serious, impactful snow event. Most of the state is dealing with robust rains and gusting winds.
But for a few hours, at the coldest part of the day, moisture will be running headlong into that cold pocket of air. It starts as snow along and north of I-78. A quick coating to an inch is likely before transitioning over to rain. Any accumulation will quickly get washed away. Rain will continue for the remainder of the day.
North of I-78 and west of I-287 the snow sticks around longer, allowing for a little more snow to develop.
The definition for "plowable" snow from the National Weather Service is two inches or more. So technically, some areas will receive their first plowable snow in ten months.
I think a general one to three inches of snow is likely. Eventually as the day wears on, and the column of air begins to warm, that snow will also begin to change to rain. Any accumulation will turn to a slurpy like consistency.
Further north and west, and neighborhoods developed in elevation, 900 feet plus - now we're talking about snowfall. It's here that your lot could see between four to six inches of heavy wet snow.
Please be extra careful here clearing this water soggy snowfall. It will be heavy. Listen to your body. Even here as the day continues, the snow will eventually change over to a wintry mix then rain.
No matter which weather lens you are looking at, the day is wet and cold. Expect travel delays at the airports, on the roads and at the rails. The weather on Tuesday will slow us down.
Welcome to winter everyone!
