NYC Health + Hospitals is on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic as the cases continue to increase throughout the city.
Dr. Eric Wei is the chief quality officer and emergency medicine physician. He says that if we could see what COVID-19 does to the body, even in those who were previously healthy, it would be enough to make people take social distancing seriously.
Dr. Wei says the hospital is continuing to work to increase its capacity as Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered.
He says all HHC emergency rooms will be turned into large resuscitation critical care pods, as non-coronavirus patients are being cared for in other spaces.
As far as personal protective equipment, he says NYC Health + Hospitals has gone above and beyond the standards for protective gear set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health.
He says any patient being treated for coronavirus is protected and that as the situation changes, they are being reactive as much as they are being proactive.
Dr. Wei says that if you go into respiratory failure your chances of healing are not very good. He says you should call your physician if you have worsening conditions or have difficulty breathing.
He says this is what nurses and doctors are trained for and that they will do anything to save as many lives as possible.
