A small migrant shelter is up and running in Williamsburg. It opened last year but many neighbors there had no clue.
"I would have never known that they were in the hotel, so it's not like they're disturbing the neighborhood," said Williamsburg resident Gina.
According to the Department of Homeless Services, the hotel Le Jolie transitioned into an emergency shelter last year. Lincoln Restler is that district's council member. He says he only found out 24 to 48 hours before residents moved in. He says he understands the need to open shelters quickly.
"We made sure to notify key stakeholders and partners in the community. You're never able to reach every single person in an area," said Restler.
The not-for-profit St. P.A.U.L.S Inc. will soon operate the site. It was operated by the National Guard and DHS staff since its opening. The not-for-profit was awarded a $12.3 million contract to run it by DHS. Restler pushed for the contract and is hopeful that the organization will help migrants move on from the shelter system.
"It's often good news that residents don't realize there's a shelter in their neighborhood, that it's not causing issues or impacting people's quality of life," said Restler.
