A man is dead and a police officer is in a medically-induced coma after a police-involved shooting at a Brownsville salon Friday night.
Police say it all happened around 5:40 p.m. on Mother Gaston Boulevard and Sutter Avenue. They say a man walked into a nail salon to use the bathroom, then began urinating in the middle of the salon.
Officers were called to the scene and went to arrest the man when they discovered he had an active warrant. They say the man resisted arrest.
Another man barged in from outside and a scuffle ensued with officers, according to police. Officials say Tasers were ineffective, and the second man who came into the salon struck an officer with a metal chair.
According to police, officers opened fire six times, striking and killing that man.
Assemblywoman Latrice Walker says she happened to be in the area when all of this unfolded saying.
"It was mayhem. Children were running, families were afraid, my daughter was screaming. I'm traumatized, I don't know if my child was traumatized, but I know our community is definitely traumatized," says Walker.
News 12 is told the officer who was struck with a chair is now in critical, but stable condition in a medically-induced coma at Brookdale Medical Center. The second officer was treated and released from the hospital.
The man officers were initially called to remove was arrested and has charges pending, according to police.
