TODAY: Why Watch vs Warning? We just aren’t sure if more than 6 inches falls in the Bronx. That’s why The Bronx is currently under a Winter Storm Watch: due to low confidence. Brooklyn, however, is under a Winter Storm Warning because it gets buried with at least 6 inches in the Southeast corner (Canarsie). The confidence for the Brooklyn forecast is much higher. The uncertainly lies here: in the last 12 hours, a trend in some of the weather models have cut the Bronx’s snowfall in half. That said, a few reliable models keep yesterday’s high snowfall forecast amounts. (Look at other informational sources, and the Bronx’s forecast varies wildly: 1-6” spread) Hopefully the uncertainty clears up by 11:30 am with the next round of fresh data. Light rain this morning, tapers to clouds and drizzle before noon. Most of the afternoon is cloudy in the mid 40s. Melting will allow those big puddles to keep forming. Tonight brings rain back by 9pm, but that gradually turns to ice after 11p, then snow around midnight. Anticipate a 2-3 accumulation by 4am, with heavy snow falling (especially in SE Brooklyn) until 9am. By 10am there should be around 3-6 citywide (lower Bronx/higher Brooklyn. The question is whether light accumulations continue until 6pm tomorrow, raising tomorrow’s finaly totals to the current forecast: 3-6 Bronx, 4-8 Brooklyn. Just like many of the winter weather systems this year, this one warrants close attention, as changes will be frequent. Sunny and calm, but cold on Friday, with continued sun and near 50 thru Tuesday. mike
