1 NYPD sergeant killed, 1 hurt in Bronx shootout; suspect dead
One NYPD sergeant was killed and another was injured in a shootout with a suspect in the Bronx's Van Nest neighborhood Friday, according to police.
City officials say Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, an 18-year veteran of the NYPD, was shot in the head and killed. His partner, identified as Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, was shot in the leg and wounded.
Police say the suspect died in the gunbattle with police. He was identified as 35-year-old Manuel Rosales, of Brentwood, Long Island.
A woman called 911 around 2:45 p.m. to report a man with a gun had broken into her apartment on Beach Avenue, said NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill, speaking at an evening news conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio.
O'Neill said Rosales forced his way into the apartment, where his 29-year-old estranged wife and their 3-year-old son were located. Also inside were a 13-year-old child and a 50-year-old woman, who made the initial 911 call.
Dispatchers reported that the suspect fled in a red Jeep, which police spotted nearby at 2:52 p.m., O'Neill said. Officers approached the Jeep at 1575 Bronx River Ave.
Rosales, who has a criminal record that includes 17 prior arrests in Suffolk County, opened fire on the uniformed officers with a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun, O'Neill said.
Police returned fire, killing Rosales.
Sgts. Tuozzolo and Kwo were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where Tuozzolo was pronounced dead.
Officials say Kwo was treated for his injury and released from the hospital Friday night.
The mayor said Tuozzolo had a wife and two young children. He had served in the 43rd Precinct for the last 10 years.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement praising the NYPD's selflessness and offering condolences for the victims' families.
"My deepest sympathies are with the families of the officers involved in today's tragedy in the Bronx, and with Commissioner O'Neill and the NYPD as they cope with the loss of one of their own," Cuomo said.
