Ten people were arrested in Williamsburg Friday at a protest attempting to stop National Grid from continuing construction on a North Brooklyn pipeline.
Brooklyn residents with Extinction Rebellion, a global environmental movement, refused to remove themselves from the construction site--to ensure work can't continue. As a result, 10 people were arrested.
"This community doesn't want this pipeline, they didn't give consent for it to be built, and as a rent payer I'm upset that my bills are about to go up to pay for this pipeline," said a protester.
In a statement, a National Grid spokesperson told News 12," We cannot have protesters enter work zones and potentially endanger the safety of our employees and the public."
Those protesting told News 12 the demonstration was very successful, as it halted construction for about two hours. They say this is just the beginning.
Another public rally is scheduled for Feb. 29.
