Two Ridgewood High School students are facing charges after a fight landed one of them in the hospital.
Ridgewood Police Chief Jaqueline Luthcke announced that a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were charged with assault after the fight last week.
Officials say that the fight happened Oct. 28 on Brookside Field, not far from Ridgewood High School. The fight was filmed by another student and posted on social media.
The 14-year-old student is facing aggravated and simple assault charges, while the 16-year-old is facing simple assault charges.
One of the teens was hospitalized following the fight with a fractured skull. Police declined to elaborate which teen it was.
Ridgewood residents tell News 12 New Jersey that one of the students involved in the fight was defending a female student who was being bullied. The fight happened after school hours.
Ridgewood Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Fishbein wrote to parents in an email that the incident involved the misuse of social media.
Parents say that the fight was a case of bullying, but school and police officials have refrained from calling it that.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
