Affordable housing advocates and proponents of a controversial project at the Broadway Triangle have reached an agreement after spending almost a decade at odds.
The settlement includes hundreds of affordable units. Advocates say it's a major victory for them and for the neighborhood's black and Latino residents.
The conflict initially began when advocates sued the Bloomberg administration over its zoning and housing proposal to develop the unique junction of Williamsburg, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy. The lawsuit argued that plan discriminated against communities of color and gave housing preference to Community District 1, which is overwhelmingly white.
Under the new agreement, residents of Community District 3, who are primarily people of color, will also receive housing priority. And it includes about 400 affordable housing units.
"It provides an opportunity for us to help protect some of our current residents from displacement," says Alex Fennell, a housing advocate.
