Thursday marked three years since Superstorm Sandy hit the northeast, but some Canarsie residents say it feels like yesterday.
Community members came together for a candlelight vigil at a pier in Canarsie to remember and reflect on the damages done by the hurricane.
In 2012, Sandy washed over the pier, flooding streets and basements. Heavy winds downed power lines and knocked over trees.
Recovery has been slow for many across the northeast, with some of the Canarsie homeowners saying they continue to battle insurance companies in order to obtain funds to rebuild their homes.
Residents say they are not focusing on the wreckage caused by the storm. They say they've united at the pier to celebrate the strength of the community.
Major Bill de Blasio also announced a major overhaul of the city's Build it Back program Thursday. He says the overhaul aims to streamline the rebuilding process.
De Blasio says all construction on damaged single-family homes will be completed by 2016.
