More than 3,000 school teachers, administrators and school aides in The Bronx and across the city received pink slips today.
A total of 24 city schools, including Lehman High School in The Bronx, will be closing down and reopening this fall under new names and with new staffs.
Officials say the teachers who were laid off today can reapply for their jobs but are not guaranteed to be rehired.
The layoffs are a part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to overhaul failing schools in order to make them eligible for federal school improvement grants.
Teachers and principal unions have sued the city to keep the schools open. An arbitrator will make a ruling on the lawsuit by the end of this month.
