The memories of two NYPD detectives who were killed in Bed-Stuy five years ago were honored on Friday with a back-to-school event.
Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot and killed while sitting in their police car in Bed-Stuy. Five years later, the community is keeping their memory alive.
Just blocks away from where they lost their lives, hundred of backpacks were handed out to kids from P.S. 59 and P.S. 297.
Ramos' wife says positivity is what her husband would have wanted, which is why they began the Rafael Ramos Foundation and the backpack giveaway.
"My husband was killed literally two blocks from here and I just want the community to know just because something bad happened in your community doesn't mean there's bad people there," said Maritza Ramos.
The NYPD band performed at the event. Kids enjoyed a lot of fun activities like rock wall climbing, games, a bouncy house and even had a live DJ.
The NYPD Mounted Unit also named a horse after Ramos, his name is Ralphy. The focus was to ensure kids were ready for the school year, something the principal says she's incredibly grateful for.
Their work does not end here, as they begin to work on their holiday toy drive. The goal is to collect 1,000 toys to give out to kids in December.
