A 5-year-old boy is dead after falling down an elevator shaft in Williamsburg Tuesday morning.Police say the accident happened at around 8:15 a.m., when the victim, Jacob Neuman, and his 8-year-old brother took the elevator on the 11th floor of an apartment building at 70 Clymer St. on their way to school.According to Neuman?s brother, the doors of the elevator started to flutter, and it got stuck between the 10th and the 11th floors. His brother attempted to escape by jumping out and fell to his death into the shaft. Neuman was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Neighbors in the building are outraged by the tragedy. They say they have repeatedly asked the city to inspect the elevator, which has been a constant cause of complaints among the tenants.According to the New York City Department of Buildings, the last four elevator inspections at 70 Clymer St. were deemed unsatisfactory. However, during the most recent inspection, conducted in October 2007, no safety violations were found. NYCHA says the incident is currently under review.
The funeral for Neuman was held Tuesday afternoon.
