Brooklyn's acting district attorney is altering the approach to prosecuting low-level crimes allegedly committed by immigrants, whether they are documented or not.

Eric Gonzalez says the move is a step toward equal justice for all Brooklyn residents, regardless of their immigration status.

"In order to make sure the community is fair, that the criminal justice system is fair and that law enforcement is fair, we have to be fair to all," he says. "We have to be fair to victims as well as people accused of crimes. There can't be two standards here."

Gonzalez says he's training prosecutors in his office to understand the potential, unintended consequences that may stem from plea offers and sentencing recommendations given to immigrants.

The goal is to prevent low-level offenders from getting deported, he says. What exactly constitutes a low-level offense, however, he says will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
