A call for action from several homeless advocacy groups is scheduled for later Tuesday morning.
Several homeless advocacy groups are calling on the mayor to do more than just have encampment sweeps and kick homeless New Yorkers out of the subway. They want the mayor to take responsibility. They plan to lay out how they think he should do it.
Vocal-NY says 2021 was the deadliest year for homeless New Yorkers even for those who lived in the shelter system.
They say of 640 homeless New Yorkers who lost their lives, 489 were living in shelters. The mayor says he connected more than 300 unhoused New Yorkers with shelters in his first month of targeted subway outreach.
He also says he has opened to more than 400 total safe haven and stabilization beds since the start of the year. He has partnered with the state to launch safe option support teams, or a trained mental health staff, who can help bring unsheltered New Yorkers into stable housing.
At the Fulton Street Transit Center in Manhattan, Vocal-NY along with several other groups and some current and formerly homeless New Yorkers will join together to call on the mayor to do more.
