City leaders are touting the Lights on Afterschool program to keep students engaged and safe at the Edward B. Shallow Junior High School.

Programs range from robotics to cooking to basketball, among other activities.

The Lights on Afterschool campaign is a citywide program currently in its 17th year. The Department of Youth and Community Development joined the Afterschool Alliance Thursday to celebrate its progress.

Officials say one in five students across the country is unsupervised at the end of the school day, and after-school programs have the potential to give them a constructive place to go.
