A new state-of-the-art AIDS vaccine research facility will open its doors at the Brooklyn Army Terminal as a part of the city?s plan to create a bio-technology hub in Sunset Park.
"We've hired 30 scientists from around the world, we're going to expand as the lab gets under way, and [we] hope biotech companies move here,? says Dr. Seth Berkley.
The city and state have invested a combined $60 million into renovating the old military supply depot building, which will become the headquarters of the International Aids Initiative.
"The potential to change the world is right here in this building," Mayor Michael Bloomberg says.
The scientists involved in the project will be working exclusively on testing vaccines from all over the world in an effort to find a cure for the disease.
"The AIDS vaccine is the only way we're going to end this epidemic," Berkley says.
