Anti-gun violence basketball tournament held in East Flatbush
The Hoops for Justice Tournament was held Saturday at Tilden Park to honor two people who were killed during interactions with police.
Athletes taking part in the tournament were able to show off their basketball skills while also honoring the memories of 23-year-old Shantel Davis and 16-year-old Kimani Gray. Both Davis’ and Gray's families claim they were killed due to police brutality.
Davis was fatally shot during a confrontation with Detective Phil Atkins in 2012. Police say Atkins’ gun went off as the two were struggling, after Davis had crashed a stolen car in East Flatbush. She was unarmed.
The following year, Gray was fatally shot by police, who said the teen had a gun.
In both incidents, the police officers involved were not convicted of any crimes.
Years after the death of Davis and Gray, both families say it's upsetting that there's been no resolution. The families say they turn their frustration into an annual positive event that shows youth how to avoid violence.
Participants in the tournament all earn medals, and a few receive gift cards for their involvement.
Members of the Justice Committee were also in attendance this year to offer information to attendees about understanding and exercising their rights in ways that are effective and safe.
