An Army sergeant from Brooklyn was one of two soldiers killed in a combat mission in Iraq last Sunday.
The Pentagon says both service members were exchanging fire with members of the Islamic State group when they were caught in some sort of mishap. They were identified as 30-year-old Sgt. Roshain Brooks, of Brooklyn's Canarsie section, and 22-year-old Sgt. Allen Stigler, of Texas. Both were paratroopers in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division.
Brooks joined the Army in July 2012 and deployed for a five-month tour in Afghanistan two years later. This was his first deployment to Iraq.
News 12 tried to reach out to Brooks' family but was told by a relative that his parents were en route to identify his body.
"Our team extends its most sincere condolences to their families and friends," the commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team and 82nd Airborne Division said in a statement. "Their personal commitments to our campaign against ISIS were extraordinary and we are incredibly proud to have served with them."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday.
The Army is still investigating the incident.
