A Bronx County Supreme Court judge has dropped charges of assault and criminal drug possession against a local teenager who had claimed that he was the victim of police brutality.

Today, the prosecution said there was not enough evidence to support the claim that 19-year-old Jateik Reed assaulted an officer during his arrest in January.

According to the criminal complaint, officers from the 42nd Precinct stopped Reed on suspicion of drug possession. The teenager's attorney, Michael Warren, argues that his client was not carrying drugs and that excessive force was used to detain him.

Warren says they're now focusing on a robbery charge to which his client had pleaded not guilty. The robbery complaint was filed the day after Reed was allegedly beaten, but his attorney says the robbery in question happened seven days earlier.

In addition to the robbery charge from January, the district attorney's office says Reed faces another robbery charge he was indicted on in June 2011. Reed is due back in court April 24.

Meanwhile, Reed and his defense team plan to file a civil suit against the city and the NYPD.
