The estranged husband of missing New Canaan woman Jennifer Dulos, who was charged in her murder, had died following an apparent suicide attempt, his attorney says.
Fotis Dulos' attorney, Norm Pattis, made the announcement outside of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in the Bronx Thursday night. It came hours after News 12 learned Dulos' legal team had filed a motion to preserve evidence and claimed during a search of his car, investigators found a note declaring his innocence.
Police were called to Dulos' Farmington home Tuesday after he didn't show up to an emergency bond hearing. A motion to revoke his bond had been filed which prompted the hearing, meaning Dulos could've gone back to jail.
There were concerns he didn't have the collateral to back his $6 million bond.
When officers got to his home, Dulos was found unresponsive in his car in the garage. He was taken to UConn Health before being transferred to the Bronx hospital for treatment related to carbon monoxide poisoning.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi has a hyperbaric chamber. Dulos remained in the hospital in what Pattis called "dire" condition up until he was pronounced dead at 5:32 p.m.
His family, who flew in from Greece, says they will donate his organs.
Pattis says his death does not reflect a conscience of guilt. He filed a motion to have the trial continue without Dulos, and instead replace him with his estate.
Defense attorneys tell News 12 say that Pattis cannot do that.
"This is Norm Barnum trying to keep the Greatest Show on Earth going," one attorney says.
The family of Jennifer Dulos says this is a "horrific tragedy all around," and urged the public to respect the privacy of the families involved.
