Parents in Bay Ridge are hoping speed cameras can be installed outside of P.S. 30 because they say the street outside the school sometimes feels more like a highway.

According to a recent study by Transportation Alternatives, 92 percent of drivers exceed the speed limit in front of P.S. 30. The study recorded driver speeds outside six schools across the city in an effort to push the state Senate to expand its speed camera program from 50 to 140 school zones.

In Gravesend, the study found that  75 percent of drivers were speeding in front of P.S. 97.

According to the city’s Department of Transportation, speeding is down by nearly two-thirds, and pedestrian crash injuries decreased by 23 percent in areas where speed cameras have been installed.
