A fire tore through an apartment building in Bedford-Stuyvesant Tuesday night, resulting in the death of one person and sending two others to the hospital.

Flames broke out on the third floor of 18 Albany Ave. at around 7 p.m.

Witnesses say that one of the residents, Chaka Bess, ran into the burning building in an attempt to save his neighbors, who were trapped inside.

Bess reportedly climbed the fire escape to a fourth-floor apartment. He helped a 15-year-old boy and his mother escape, but when he reached the ground, Bess says he saw the boy?s father hanging from a window. He says he tried to help, but the man could not hold on.

?He was hanging on the window,? Bess says. ?[He] couldn?t hold on [anymore] because the bricks were too hot.?

The victim, 58-year-old Clyde Brown, later died at Interfaith Hospital.

The cause of the blaze has not been established, but residents say there had been a lot of electrical work going on in the building prior to the incident.
