Best of Brooklyn: Miss Brooklyn's Outstanding Teen
At only 13 years old, Asia Hickman already has a list of accomplishments.
She has won music awards, launched her own nonprofit and won the title of Miss Brooklyn's Outstanding Teen.
"It's an honor. I love the sash," she told News 12. "I have to clean it right now because it's covered with makeup, but it's amazing."
Her talents began to spring up when she was only 6 years old.
"I started to play the violin to keep my mind off my parents being deployed to Iraq, because they're both in the military," says Hickman.
Her life has been an adventure ever since. She has spent most of her time overseas in South Korea, where she ultimately learned to play her favorite instrument, the piano.
"I put my emotions and feelings into the pieces I play," she says.
She's even played at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem.
At age 11, she launched her own nonprofit, Asia Hickman Music, giving free music lessons to underprivileged children all around the country.
"I wanted to spread my joy for music with others who couldn't afford taking classes or wanted to learn something around music that touched them in a way," says Hickman.
She hopes to win the Miss New York's Outstanding Teen 2017 crown this weekend.
"My dream is to become a philanthropist and a pianist. I'm going to keep up with my organization…and all my studies," she says.
