Best of the Bronx: Poet Alyssa Martinez
One Bronx girl has been inspiring others with her poetry, even getting the attention of Lin Manuel Miranda and former first lady Michelle Obama.
Alyssa Martinez has a love for poetry that started young.

“Basically since I was able to read, that is kind of when I picked up a pencil and I really developed a love for writing,” says Martinez.

Born and raised in the Bronx, she says her mom always pushed education and supports her in every way.
In February, she thanked her mom in front of a big crowd, by performing a special poem during a swearing in for Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

That performance happened at Renaissance High School, where Martinez graduated two years ago.

“I really, really enjoyed my time here. Like I learned a lot, I grew a lot while I was here and I got a lot of support that a lot of students at different schools probably don't receive,” says Martinez.

AOC isn't the only high profile person she has worked with. She has performed for former first lady Michelle Obama and during high school she performed in front of the cast of “Hamilton.”
It was through a program that offered high school students the chance to see the play by doing research and creating an artistic piece.
Lin Manuel Miranda even helped sponsor events Alyssa performs in through a group called "Girl Be Heard."

“He has always stressed the importance of staying true to yourself and the importance of hard work and dedication,” says Martinez.

Martinez is currently going to college, working and still performing. One way she is hoping to put herself through school is by writing a book.

Martinez says she wants to continue to inspire.

“I want people my age or within in my community to know that this is where we are at, but this isn't where we will always be, and we can definitely do better we can push for more,” says Martinez.
