Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation Thursday that many believe will help turn a thriving downtown neighborhood into an economic powerhouse.
The measure creates a business improvement district, or BID, covering stretches of Court, Livingston and Schermerhorn streets.
Participating business owners will pay additional fees in exchange for improved services. The project is expected to initially cost $765,000.
The area will benefit from increased sanitation seven days a week and graffiti removal. The BID will also get marketing services and lighting during busy shopping seasons.
