For October’s Dyslexia Awareness Month, community members and officials have asked for Muhammad Ali’s daughter to help spread awareness.
Miya Ali, who like her father has dyslexia, wants to bring a positive message for those with the condition.
“You don't have to suffer with the stigmas,” she said Monday speaking at Mary McDowell Friends School. “You are not the only one with this, and special people have dyslexia."
This month aims to bring awareness to those with dyslexia because it often goes undiagnosed and causes low self-esteem.
State lawmakers are also mulling a bill that would require dyslexia training for educators. Advocates are also pushing for early screenings and diagnosis.
State Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon says that officials hope to clarify some of the misunderstandings that people have about dyslexia and help make a difference in children's lives.
