City bus drivers in Brooklyn say the slaying of a co-worker has made them fearful about the job.

The victim, 46-year-old Edwin Thomas, was driving the B46 bus in Brooklyn when the attacker got on shortly after noon Monday.

Police say the man a swiped an invalid fare card and sat down before asking for a transfer slip. When Thomas told the man he didn't pay for the ride and couldn't get a transfer, the man punched him in the head and stabbed him in the torso.

Thomas was rushed to a hospital, where he died. The attacker ran away.

At the Flatbush Depot on Fillmore Avenue, Thomas' co-workers expressed fear and regret about his death. "He was a nice guy," says one transit worker. "We would always speak to each other."

Bus drivers are now calling on the New York City Transit Authority to put surveillance cameras in buses.
