The Brooklyn Children?s Museum honored the first day of Kwanzaa Friday with an interactive exhibit that will be open during the seven-day holiday.

Kwanzaa is a non-religious celebration that was first organized by a black leader in the 1960s to highlight humanitarian principles, like unity and faith, along with African-American heritage and pride. The museum exhibit teaches children and other visitors about culture, religion and other principles of Kwanzaa, while encouraging kids to make crafts, like painted candle holders.

According to some Kwanzaa celebrators, the holiday is not just for African-Americans, but for all members of the community to come together during the holiday season. Kwanzaa will last until Jan. 1.
