Brooklyn officials took a stand today to fight a "stand your ground" law from coming to New York State.

The elected officials, state lawmakers and families affected by gun violence gathered at the Peace Out, Peace In mural on Prospect Place to urge Sen. George Maziarz (R-62nd District) to withdraw the proposed legislation.

The bill would authorize people to use physical force if they believe it's necessary to defend themselves or others. It has gained national attention after neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman claimed self-defense under Florida's version of the law when he shot and killed unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

Maziarz has defended the bill, claiming Democrats are using the issue to score political points.
